Bears tragedy in China - Bears live in these cages all their lives...feeling horrible pain, wasting away until death, because of a catheter introduced in their gall bladder to extract bile, used just to make shampoo, aphrodisiacs and "miraculous" medicines.

Dolphin Freedom Coalition Marine mammals suffer terribly in captivity, and public opinion is decidedly anti-captivity, but the Virginia Marine Science
Museum is sorely out of touch on this issue.

Please look at http://www.ifaw.org/moonbearfacts2.html  Write a letter to Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and urge him to continue closing down the worst bear farms, improve conditions for bears still suffering, and strive towards the total elimination of bear farms in China. Ask him to encourage the use of effective herbal and synthetic replacements to bear bile to reduce the use of animal parts in Traditional Medicine. Send your letter care of IFAW, P.O. Box 193, Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts 02675-0193 USA. IFAW will present it to Premier Rongji with the many other letters and cards they are receiving on this issue.

The Great Ape Project - The idea is radical but simple: to include the nonhuman great apes within the community of equals by granting them the basic moral and legal protection that only human beings currently enjoy. A collective work of a group of scientists and scholars, compiling a multifaceted argument against the unthinking denial of fundamental rights, or moral protections, to beings who are not members of our own species, but who quite evidently possess many of the characteristics that we consider morally important. The organization is a newly established international group founded to work for the removal of the nonhuman great apes from the category of property, and for their immediate inclusion within the category of persons. The long-term goal of the Great Ape Project is a United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Great Apes.
